What’s up in BKS?

Summer is coming to an end, and the next term is approaching in leaps and bounds. It is time to swap your easy summer pocket books with your heavy course readings, and to leave your cushy life at mum’s with wholesome dinners served everyday for grilled cheese sandwiches in constricted one room flats and dorms.

Lagshuset

But fortunately, there is more to student life than heavy reading material and simple living arrangements. Bergen Christian Student Union (BKS) is a student organization in Bergen that works to make Jesus known in universities and colleges, so that students will believe in him, love him and follow him. BKS has many different activities in the course of a study year. Here are some of them:

Saturday meetings

Every second Saturday at 7.30 pm, we have meetings in our house at Kalfarveien 8. Here we come together to listen to teachings and pray and worship God together. There is a prayer meeting at 7 pm, and an open café afterwards. The café serves exquisite food, both hot dinnerish, sweet desertish, and, of course, coffee. Our first meeting in the fall semester is Saturday August 22 at 7.30 pm.

Workshops

Some Wednesdays we have workshops, which last from 7 pm to approximately 9 pm. Each workshop focuses on a different theme, which is explored more thoroughly than is possible at the Saturday meetings. This semester, we will have workshops on themes like Prayer, Salvation, and Grace. We will also have an interesting workshop in October on how to use movies and popular culture in preaching the gospel. Our first workshop, on prayer, will be Wednesday, September 23 at 7 pm.

Small groups

BKS has several bible groups, and we are always happy to grow. We read the Bible together, talk about the scripture and learn from one another while drinking coffee and tea and having great fellowship. There will be a kick-off for our bible groups on Wednesday, September 9.

Campus groups

We have Christian fellowships on several of the campuses in Bergen. We gather during the day for a breather, perhaps a short devotion, and to hang out with God in prayer. You will find more information under the heading “Studiestedene”.

Mission group

BKS’s mission group works to support and facilitate mission both globally and nationally. Since 2002, we have been supporting the national IFES movement in a Central Asian country both financially and with our prayers. One of the biggest happenings in BKS in the fall semester is our annual mission bazaar, which will be held on Sunday, November 15.

Sports group

Every Monday between 7 and 9 pm we meet for sports at Danielsen Ungdomsskole (St. Jørgens gate 8). Most of the time, we play football, but we have been known to try out other ball sports as well. Price: 20 kr for members, 30 kr for non-members.

Prison visitation group

Some Sundays a group from BKS travels to Bergen Prison to take part in chapel services there, together with the Prison priest. Afterwards there is time to have a cup of coffee and a chat with the inmates, something that they really appreciate.

Hiking group

Christian, nature loving and sound Norwegian youths (non-Norwegians are of course welcome as well) which spend a Sunday or another day of the week enjoying God’s creation. We explore the local terrain at uneven intervals, often setting the course towards one of Bergen’s famous seven mountains.

Our house

We have a big house, which is located in Kalfarveien 8, near the old city gate. Many of our activities take place there, and it is also the site of the regional office of our national IFES movement, NKSS.

Our cabin

BKS also has a great cabin at Hosås, close to Voss. The cabin is situated in beautiful surroundings, with both a small lake, trees, blueberries and a small mountain called Veten within walking distance. The cabin has been the site of many enjoyable trips, winter, spring, summer and fall. We will have a get-to-know-each-other trip for new and old students at our cabin the weekend of August 28-30, which is definitely worth participating in.

Do you still have questions about BKS? Then you can visit our stand in the Student Centre at Bergen University Tuesday, August 18 and Friday, August 21. Here you can find a printed program for our activities this semester, as well as having a nice chat with old BKS students. See you there!
